Office365: Outlook prompts for red002.mail.emea.microsoftonline.com credentials

After transitioning from Bpos to Office365 some of our users experienced outlook opening a red002.mail.emea.microsoftonline.com promt asking for password.

  • Office365 configuration had been successfully run.
  • Autodiscover worked on other machines.
  • NSlookup for autodiscover.domain.com showed autodiscover.outlook.com.

The only thing I could find pointing at the server autodiscover-red002.mail.ema.microsoftonline.com was a .xml file named outlook-autodiscovery.xml under

[Windows 7] c:\users\%username%\appdata\local\microsoft\Sign In\Config\”profilename”

[Windows XP] C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\locale settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Sign In\Config\”profilename”

When I renamed the file to .old i was able to run a successful autodiscover test in outlook (Right-click the outlook icon in the system tray and select “Test E-mail AutoConfiguration”)

Open outlook again and it will prompt the correct autodiscover Log on with username / password restart outlook.

Sometimes the server address will not be updated but it will get the correct RPC over HTTP settings. Copy server address eg. servername.outlook.com from the settings, paste it into the email-server settings.

Apply settings.

Open outlook.

Enjoy🙂
